Description

St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, operating within the Department of Judicial Administration, provides a variety of courtroom related services. Currently, we are seeking dependable, self-motivated individuals to work within Bailiff and Deputy Sheriff, Civil process positions. Bailiff positions (starting salary $13.64 hourly) maintain peace, order and security within the courtroom and Deputy Sheriff, Civil Process positions (starting salary $15.00 hourly) process and serve legal documents within assigned geographic areas. Bailiff receives a 10% addition to pay for hours worked.

Examples of Duties

EXAMPLES OF BAILIFF DUTIES:

  • Maintain security by inspecting and securing the courtroom, surrounding hallways and doors, and the judge's chamber before and after court sessions.
  • Maintain order by observing courtroom proceedings to prevent unnecessary disruptions and taking custody of individuals as instructed by the judge.
  • Provide assistance to the jury panel by giving instructions, answering general questions, ensuring no contact occurs with unauthorized materials or persons, and escorting to and from the jury deliberation room.
  • Provide assistance to the judge and courtroom personnel by reviewing courtroom documents for completion, serving legal papers, and by filing, retrieving, and faxing documents.
  • Respond to medial emergencies as appropriate.
  • Perform additional duties as required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Current CPR (Adult and Child) and AED certification is required within 90 days of employment. Qualification with the use of a weapon may be required for some positions.

EXAMPLE OF DEPUTY SHERIFF, CIVIL PROCESS DUTIES:
  • Receives, process and documents proper service of legal papers as prescribed by law, using a personal vehicle, to residents and businesses.
  • Performs administrative duties in the office regarding civil process and execution.
  • Serve as bailiff on an as-needed basis to maintain order and to ensure the courts run smoothly.
  • Perform such additional duties as required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a current valid driver's license. Use of personal vehicle.
Minimum Qualifications

One year of education, training or experience in law enforcement, investigations or corrections or completion of an accredited law enforcement training program or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Information

SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available.

The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. After initial interviews with the selected candidates are conducted, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire.

The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision.

All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County.
