Company Overview

World War II was coming to a close when the Virginia Annual Conference of the Methodist Church formed a new non-profit corporation for its ministry to provide care for the aging. Inspired by a similar ministry in Maryland, Virginia United Methodist Homes (VUMH) identified as its mission the provision of facilities, services and programs that enhance the quality of life for older persons of all faiths.

The Hermitage in Richmond opened its doors in 1948, becoming the first in a long tradition of VUMH retirement communities. Since the beginning, VUMH has provided financial assistance for residents who outlive their resources through VUMH’s Samaritan Program. As the needs and desires of senior citizens have changed, VUMH has renovated or expanded existing communities and developed new properties. Today, the organization owns and operates seven senior living communities throughout the state:

Building on this legacy of more than sixty years of service, Virginia United Methodist Homes remains committed to serving the needs of seniors for many years to come.
