History of Community Residences Before Community Residences was incorporated 30 years ago, individuals with mental disabilities were often sent to be housed in public institutions, isolated from their homes, family and friends. Now, with the assistance of CR’s dedicated staff and patrons, thousands of area consumers have been served over the years throughout Northern Virginia, Maryland and the City of Richmond, receiving specialized care in a nurturing environment that encourages them to live as independently as possible. In 1975, area residents, church groups and government leaders of Arlington, Virginia recognized the urgent need for opportunities that would allow adults with mental disabilities to reach their highest potential in their home communities. The Ad-Hoc Committee on Group Homes, under the auspices of the Arlington Mental Health and Mental Retardation Community Services Board, recommended the formation of a new non-profit agency to centralize management of the existing residential programs and expand services in Arlington. The Arlington County Board approved funding and in October 1975, Arlington Community Residences was incorporated. Founded as Arlington Community Residences, Inc., the organization focused on providing community-based residential services for individuals with mental illness. As the need for a variety of comprehensive disability services grew, the organization expanded and began to serve communities outside of Arlington, thus changing its name to Community Residences, Inc. At this time, the organization responded to the communities' needs by developing new and innovative services, serving a broader base of consumers. At the forefront of this innovative initiative, the agency offered community-based residential services for adults, which were the first services of this kind in the area. For 40 years, CR has grown to include a variety of comprehensive services for adults, who have a mental illness, a developmental disability, a physical disability or who are homeless. Throughout this growth and expansion, Community Residences has stayed focused on providing quality services for the disabled individuals in which it serves.
