Job Description

Position Objective:

Provides carpentry services through the design and installation of furniture and fixtures throughout the Medical Center. Performs intermediate level and above corrective and preventive maintenance in the area of carpentry of each of the categories listed below according to departmental policy.

Essential Job Duties:

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  1. Builds shelves and cabinets from simple to complex designs according to AAMC standards.
  2. Install and repair suspended ceilings. Replace ceiling tiles with clean appropriate tiles.
  3. Install and repair casework, furniture, and other wood items as assigned.
  4. Train Engineering Department painters and maintenance mechanics about professional commercial carpentry, including wall and floor construction.
  5. Install and maintain carpets and floor tiling. Cleaning will be done by housekeeping.
  6. Paint and patch wall surfaces of all kinds. Installs sealants, base coats, textures, paints, patches and other painting activities as assigned, in accordance with department policy.
  7. Install wallboard and blocking, durable wall covering, and handrails.
  8. Maintain all fire and smoke barriers by assuring all openings are sealed with the appropriate 'fire stop' material.
  9. Maintain all rated fire and smoke doors in accordance with NFPA standards for gaps, latching, rate of closure, hold opens, door release, labeling, signs, and windows.
  10. Ensures the effective utilization of department resources by monitoring and compliance with safety and quality standards, department policies and procedures.

Educational/Experience Requirements:

The minimum level of education and experience for this position includes:

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent.
  • Three years in carpentry or related trade, preferably in a maintenance organization with a formal preventive maintenance program.

Required License/Certifications:

  • Must have a valid Maryland driver's license and a driving record with no more than two (2) points.

Working Conditions, Equipment, Physical Demands:

There is a reasonable expectation that employees in this position will be exposed to blood-borne pathogens.

Physical Demands - Heavy

Heavy work. Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
