Job Description

We are seeking a Shift Security Supervisor (2nd Shift), who will report to Security Manager at 555 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC.


*NOTE: This position is a non-sworn, unarmed position within the current security organization.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervise security and public safety staff, enforce departmental rules and regulations governing officers performance, and initiate disciplinary action where appropriate.
  • Assist in the setup of weekly guard schedule, monitor assignment of overtime, and initiate needed changes to cover unscheduled absences.
  • Investigate campus security incidents, prepare appropriate reports, ensure that proper campus personnel and/or external groups are notified when necessary (i.e., human resources, student affairs), and directs security personnel as needed. Maryland Police Department responds to medical emergencies and fire alarms, and directs security personnel as needed.
  • Train and supervise contract security personnel. Provide general information at roll calls.
  • Assist in scheduling and conducting fire drills including the maintenance of records for Fire Department inspections.
  • Supervise and ensure accurate, complete, and correct report writing and documentation procedures and techniques, etc.
  • Serve as liaison to the contract guard service, campus personnel, students, and other outside constituencies.
  • Resolve minor complaints or conflicts involving members of the campus community.
  • Provide foot patrol of all university grounds and buildings.
  • Conduct periodic walkthrough of all occupied buildings, ensure security officers conduct thorough patrols of campus buildings and ground.
  • Monitor CCTV and alarm systems and respond to alerts.
  • Supervise special events and assigned security personnel.
  • Supervise security officers assigned to lock and unlock campus buildings and offices as necessary.
  • Maintain security controls for issued University keys; safeguard and control issued University equipment.
  • Watch for and report irregularities, such as security breaches, facility and safety hazards, and emergency situations.
  • Remain alert for the presence of unauthorized persons and/or security code violators, approach suspicious persons, and/or notify police as appropriate.


General Supervisor Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, assess, and analyze performance of security personnel.
  • Maintain all security devices and products in good working condition.
  • Develop and implement preventative measures against accidents, thefts, and other risks.
  • Ensure compliance of applicable policies and regulations while implementing security measures.
  • Troubleshoot any problems that might arise during the shift.
  • Provide crime prevention training and education to the community we protect.
  • Act as Incident Commander until additional command resources arrive during a crisis.
  • Conduct shift-based drills to ensure security personnel readiness.
  • Maintain training and development records.
  • Monitor and track adherence to time and attendance standards.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma/GED required.
  • Three years related security experience required.
  • Must be in possession of a valid state motor vehicle driver's license and have and maintain a clean motor vehicle driving record (no more than two current points).
  • Must pass a University criminal background investigation.


Preferred Qualifications
  • At least five years of law enforcement supervisory/management experience preferred.
  • Prefer experience involving more complex assignments.
  • Associate of Arts (A.A) degree in Criminal Justice, Business, Liberal Arts, or Social Sciences discipline preferred. Bachelors degree desirable.
  • Successful completion of entrance-level training at an accredited Police Academy preferred.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
