Skilled Laborer- Pipe Layer

JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary:

The Pipe Layer assembles, installs and repairs underground pipes, fittings and valves of various materials and sizes.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Install underground utilities using different types of pipe (DIP, PVC, and HDPE) and drainage structures,
  • Work with heavy equipment take the lead in the excavation, check grade, and install pipe and/or drainage structures,
  • Assist in locating existing utilities; assist in tapping/tie-in to existing water mains,
  • Align and position pipes/drainage structures to prepare them for installation in a trench or excavation,
  • Connect pipe pieces and seal joints by using gaskets or glue,
  • Cover pipes with earth or other materials and compact using compaction equipment,
  • Dig trenches to desired or required depths and proper slopes by guiding the equipment operator,
  • Cut pipes to required lengths,
  • Prepares ground surfaces for the road building process,
  • Sets up fencing, barricades, and/or safety cones to block off the work area as needed,
  • Must wear proper attire at all times including: safety vests, safety glasses when appropriate, long pants, hard sole/close-toed shoes, and reflect a clean and presentable image,
  • May be required to work extended hours including evenings, nights, and weekends,
  • Additional duties as assigned.


Job Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old,
  • High school diploma or GED,
  • Must have a current and valid driver's license,
  • Two years of experience installing large diameter pipes for water, sewer, storm drain,
  • Experience in working with drainage systems and has the ability to make repairs,
  • Has knowledge of electrical underground conduit installation,
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move anywhere up to 50 lbs,
  • COVID-19, vaccination is highly recommended,
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background and drug screening.


Working Conditions:

  • This job may require you to work extended hours including evenings, nights, and weekends.
  • This job requires the ability to lift, pull, and push a minimum of 50 lbs., bend, stoop, kneel, reach, squat, and twist. In addition, you must have the ability to be on your feet regularly and use hands, arms, and legs repeatedly on the job. This includes frequently walking on sloped ground and slippery and uneven surfaces.
  • This job requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • This job requires the ability to see, whether naturally or with vision correction tools (glasses, contacts).
  • This job requires the ability to perform essential job tasks in less than favorable job conditions. These may include, but are not limited to: Performing strenuous work in varying temperatures, humidity, wind, or other extreme inclement weather conditions for extended periods of time.
  • Work may be performed in an environment with exposure to extremely hot materials, fuel, fumes, vapors, dust, grease and oils, as well as loud and/or constant noise and exposure to moving equipment.
