Summary:

The Asphalt Paver Operator is an hourly-rated position that is responsible for operating equipment used for placing asphalt on highways/roadways/parking lots to required density, proper grade, and ensuring smoothness. Must partner with other crew members to pave per plan specifications with an emphasis on safety and quality.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The paver operator is responsible for the efficient working condition of the equipment and is expected to perform housekeeping, inspect, clean, maintain, and make minor equipment repairs or refer malfunctions to the Foreman,
  • Preparation and layout of area to be paved, material ordering, and job pacing,
  • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment,
  • Preheat paver screed before placement of asphalt and monitor temperature of the asphalt mixture,
  • Align the paver into position when receiving asphalt by dump truck, ease paver forward, safely pushing dump truck along construction surface, determine paver speed, and maintain constant flow of asphalt into hopper, and consistence head of material,
  • Must have a "safety first" attitude. Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures is required,
  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times,
  • Must wear proper attire at all times including: safety vests, safety glasses when appropriate, long pants, hard sole/close-toed shoes, and reflect a clean and presentable image,
  • May be required to work extended hours including evenings, nights, and weekends,
  • Additional duties as assigned.


Job Requirements:

  • Must have 2 or more years of asphalt paver operation experience,
  • Valid unrestricted driver's license with a good driving history preferred,
  • Must be a reliable/trustworthy team player and maintain good attendance and safety record,
  • Required to adhere to all safety rules and regulations,
  • Must have reliable transportation,
  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent desired,
  • Knowledge of the paving process and willingness to learn multiple tasks of the paving operation,
  • Solid understanding of all aspects of the paving operation including preparatory work, grades, drainage, paving patterns, joints, compaction and other details related to asphalt paving,
  • Ability to follow direction of the supervisor and other crewmembers,
  • Able and willing to work outdoors in extreme heat and cold,
  • Must be able to lift, spread, and move materials by hand or hand tools such as shovels,
  • Must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required,
  • DC Class 7B Operators license required,
  • COVID-19, vaccination is highly recommended,
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background and drug screening.

Working Conditions:

  • This job may require you to work extended hours including evenings, nights, and weekends.
  • This job requires the ability to lift, pull, and push a minimum of 50 lbs., bend, stoop, kneel, reach, squat twist, and climb heavy equipment several times throughout the day. In addition, you must have the ability to be on your feet regularly and use hands, arms, and legs repeatedly on the job. This includes frequently walking on sloped ground and slippery and uneven surfaces, as well as working in confined areas.
  • This job requires the ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  • This job requires the ability to see, whether naturally or with vision correction tools (glasses, contacts).
  • This job requires the ability to perform essential job tasks in less than favorable job conditions. These may include, but are not limited to: Performing strenuous work in varying temperatures, humidity, wind, or other extreme inclement weather conditions for extended periods of time.
  • Work may be performed in an environment with exposure to extremely hot materials, fuel, fumes, vapors, dust, grease and oils, as well as loud and/or constant noise and exposure to moving equipment.
