We have an excellent opportunity for a talented Content Production Editor to join the Science Editorial team. We are seeking a strong copyeditor, comfortable with highly technical material, to maintain high production standards for scientific research papers in the journals Science Signaling, Science Translational Medicine, Science Immunology, and Science Robotics. We hope you can join us preferably in our Washington, DC, USA or Cambridge, UK offices.

What You'll Do

  • Review scientific research papers that have been copyedited by vendor for grammar, house style, and specialized scientific nomenclature
  • Collate and check proof revisions made by authors, editors, and others
  • Ensure that article files are complete and correct according to publication schedule
  • Process post-publication corrections
  • Assist and provide coverage for editorial coordinators, including updating documentation, tracking manuscripts as they move through production, and communicating with stakeholders
  • Troubleshoot editorial and technical problems as they arise
  • Perform other duties that may include special projects, internal reports, and testing new products

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree with a strong background in English or Bachelor of Arts degree with a strong background in science
  • Familiarity and experience with scholarly publishing workflows and technologies such as XML and content and production systems
  • Strong copyediting skills, with demonstrated understanding of publication standards and proven ability to edit highly technical scientific and mathematical material; 3-5 years of copyediting experience preferred
  • Strong technical skills in contemporary software packages, including Word, Adobe Acrobat, and Excel, and collaborative software such as Teams and Slack
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and time management
  • Ability to learn new technologies and incorporate new skills and knowledge into daily work

Location

We have offices in Washington, DC and Cambridge, UK but are open to remote workers in select states. If you are not located in or able to work from a state where AAAS has a business presence, you may not be eligible for this position. The anticipated initial rate of compensation for this position is $60,000 - 70,000 per year (for candidates hired in the US). AAAS currently provides the following benefits for this position: paid vacation leave, paid sick leave, paid holidays, health insurance, flexible spending account, dental insurance, life insurance, vision insurance, retirement benefits, short- and long-term disability, each subject to the terms of the applicable program. Additional benefits may apply.

Any actual offer of employment, reflecting the total compensation package and benefits, will be made in the sole discretion of AAAS and will be based on a variety of factors, including years of experience, depth of experience, and other relevant factors.
