Job Description Summary:An internship at the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) offers an introduction to journal publishing, science communications, vendor management, and marketing at one of the top multidisciplinary scientific journals in the world.

As a Marketing DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility) Intern at PNAS, you will actively contribute to building and promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) within our journal portfolio. During this 6 to 8-week program from June 10 - August 2 (based on unit's needs) your role will involve hands-on experiences in curating and engaging with authors, readers, and social media followers across various channels. Throughout the internship, collaboration with various PNAS teams, including editorial, production, front matter, and recruiting, will deepen your understanding of how each department contributes to the journal's DEI strategic goals. By the end of the internship, you will have cultivated a robust portfolio comprising marketing copy and digital marketing assets, acquired knowledge of accessibility tools and capabilities, and gained valuable experience in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within a prominent scientific publication.

Projects and activities may include:
*Creation and management of a DEI content calendar to enhance online inclusivity.
*Expanding the ECR (early career researcher) list supports diversity and recruitment aims.
*Strategic marketing of the DEI landing page underscores commitment to diversity and equity.
*Diversifying vendors for swag aligning with sustainability and diverse procurement priorities.
*Conducting an accessibility audit ensures standards compliance, contributing to an inclusive scientific communication platform, and enhances accessibility tools for the Marketing team.
*Performing research to expand the diversity of PNAS writer, editor, and graphic design freelancers.

What you'll bring

*Strong written and verbal communication skills. Proven technical writing skills and/or digital marketing skills are preferred but not required.
*Strong organizational skills and an attention to detail

Eligibility:
PNAS DEIA internships are open to currently enrolled undergraduate college students (proof of enrollment must be provided during screening process) who are interested in learning more about the scholarly publishing industry. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

Administrative: Performs administrative tasks. Creates and maintains databases and files. Assists with meeting preparation as needed. Writing and Editing: Proofreads and copyedits documents. Research Activities: Performs subject-oriented literature searches. Gathers references. May participate in other research efforts including collection, assembly, and the tabulation of data and summarizing literature. May assist in analyzing basic research results. Academic/Career Development: Undertakes one or more short-term projects designed to assist with enhancing ongoing study projects.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to solve problems with supervisory consultation or by following procedures. Ability to prioritize work and the flexibility to change directions as the job dictates. Ability to work successfully in a team environment. Ability to develop relationships with co-workers and employees in other National Academies' departments through effective communication. Good written, verbal, and interpersonal skills with an ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent knowledge. Current enrollment in a college or university program.

Minimum Experience: None.

Physical Capabilities: Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.

Required Licenses, Certification, or Registration: None.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Reports to an Associate Program Officer, Program Officer, or Senior Program Officer. Supervisor is available to organize work, set objectives, and assist in problem resolution.

Compensation: The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine support equity, fairness, and transparency in our compensation programs. The compensation for this position is $18.00 per hour.

Work Environment: Hybrid office/telecommute environment, expected onsite percentage 40% (for local candidates only), with occasional travel between National Academies' facilities. Fully remote work opportunities for non-local candidates.
