BASIC FUNCTIONS

Carries out analyses on all Refinery samples such as crude oils, intermediate and finished petroleum products, utility and process water samples, lube oil samples, scales and sludges from different units, corrosion products, catalysts, process chemicals, industrial wastes, effluent water, samples related with environmental pollution control, gases, granulated sulphur, Steam Water Cycle (Area 10) water samples and other related substances.

Follows standard test methods adopting wet chemistry techniques and state-of-the-art technology, in conjunction with sophisticated, computerized Laboratory equipment requiring computer literacy, special skills, care and experience, for plant control, quality control, product certification, corrosion control etc.

Supervises the work performed by Samplemen. Acts for Senior Lab. Technician during his absence.


WORK PERFORMED

Supervises the activities of the Samplemen. Ensures that samples are collected from the proper locations. Directs and coordinates all the activities of the Laboratory during afternoon and night shifts, weekends, and public holidays during the absence of Senior Laboratory Technician. Follows up all instructions given by Senior Lab. Technician for the smooth running of the Laboratory. Ensures that Samplemen properly label and seal laboratory retention samples and the samples delivered to vessels. Ensures that retention samples are properly catalogued and orderly arranged in the samples retention room by the Samplemen for a specific period of time. Monitors the addition of chemical additives to vessels' tanks by the Samplemen. Carries out all required tests on samples Logs Lab. test results in LIMS and prepares quality daily and monthly report by LIMS. Carries out a wide range of tests on JIGPC and Refinery samples such as Steam Water Samples, Crude oil, intermediate and finished petroleum products, utility water samples, Lube oil samples, scales and sludges from different units, corrosion products, gases and catalysts in accordance to established international standard methods using state of the art technology, sophisticated, computerized Laboratory analyzers and wet Chemistry techniques. Carries out tests on Granulated Sulphur samples for plant control and quality certification. Performs special tests on industrial wastes, effluent water samples related with environmental pollution control. Conducts tests on process chemicals to evaluate their purity. Operates, maintains and calibrates sophisticated computerized analyzers such as Gas chromatographs, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, IR spectrophotometer, ICP Analyzer, UV/Visible spectrophotometer, X-Ray spectrophotometer, memotitrators, nitrogen analyzer, Vacuum distillation, atmospheric distillation, freezing point, pour point, cloud point, CFPP analyzers, and Chlorine Analyser. etc. Performs experimental studies for product quality improvement, better yields and to determine the cause of any problems affecting product quality. Carries out special analyses in the units during units shutdown and start up. Carries out routine preventive maintenance on all Lab. Equipment in accordance with established procedure and schedules, for optimum functioning and precision. Performs analyses on samples received from other operating centres, sister companies, and third parties. Carries out analyses on BP/ASTM/AGCC Laboratory correlation samples in compliance with the world wide cross check program organized by British Petroleum / ASTM/AGCC. Prepares calibration blends to check performance of analyzers. Prepares and standardizes chemical reagents and solutions necessary for analyses. Assists in the installation, commissioning and calibration of newly acquired Lab. equipment. Compares test results with respective standard specifications and reports to Senior Lab. Technician if there is any deviation. Moves and fixes carrier gas cylinders for instrumental analysis.

INDEPENDENCE OF OPERATION.

Reports to Senior Lab. Chemist/Lab. Chemist and receives work direction from Senior Laboratory Technician. Performs highly technical duties in accordance with well defined Laboratory procedures and established Quality Control standards. Completed work is checked and approved by the Senior Lab. Technician and/or Senior Lab. Chemist/Lab. Chemist / Lab. Supervisor.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS.

8.1. Diploma in Analytical Chemistry or equivalent qualification.

8.2. 4 years experience in Petroleum Refinery and Power Plant Laboratory and familiarity with advanced computerized Laboratory equipment.

OR

8.1.a. Secondary High School Certificate offering Science subjects.
8.2.b. 8 years Petroleum Refinery Laboratory experience & Power Plants and familiarity with advanced Computerized Laboratory equipment.
8.3. Good command of written and spoken English.
8.4. Computer literate.
