Dean, School of Sciences, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics
American Public University System

The Dean for the School of Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math (STEM) is the academic head of the school, providing the vision and leadership that ensures quality in teaching and learning and the effective growth of academic programs in alignment with the academic and university strategic plans. Under the current strategies, this includes a focus on engagement of instruction, effectiveness of course design, and quality of the program curricula. The dean leads the Department Chairs (7) and Faculty (~360) and is responsible for seeking appropriate accreditation and recognition from STEM-related accrediting bodies. The dean works collegially and collaboratively with other deans and departments throughout the university, and fosters relationships and partnerships regionally, nationally, and internationally, promoting the STEM school and university in these communities.

The Dean is required to use good ethical judgement and seeks the success of students first. The dean develops and manages the talent by building a culture of collaboration and innovation within the School of Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math and across the University. The Dean evaluates and gives feedback for improvement of performance for directors, as well as the performance of programs-especially in measures of student success: student persistence, progression, and completion. The Dean manages the school budget and acts as a good steward of school and university resources.

Reporting Relationships and Supervision

  • Title of immediate manager: Provost
  • Title of next higher manager: President

Responsibilities:

  • Leads and guides the quality and successful delivery of teaching and learning in the school.
  • Promotes the reputation and differentiated offerings of the school and university.
  • Envisions and supports Chairs and ID in the design if curriculum, programs, and courses for the school that are relevant to current and future needs.
  • Maintains standards unique to online STEM programs and labs.
  • Implements, assesses, and continuously improves course, program, and institutional learning outcomes.
  • Supports and implements the School of Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math Strategic Plan, as well as the academic and university strategic plans.
  • Implements best practices established by HLC, ACE, SOC, CHEA, ABET, NSA and related STEM programs accrediting bodes, associations and organizations.
  • Establishes and enforces academic standards and appropriate quality and rigor that is unique to the school and in alignment with the university's academic quality design framework and faculty, student, and staff policies.
  • Oversees regular program reviews and benchmarking analyses.
  • Develops and utilizes key metrics and performance indicators.
  • Creates and leads Industry advisory councils for programs and disciplines.
  • Collaborates and creates cross-disciplinary programs, concentrations, and certificates with other schools and deans.
  • Recruits, selects, and manages the Chairs, including planning and providing professional development and talent management.
  • Oversees the recruitment, selection, and professional development of faculty members through Chairs.
  • Supports the onboarding, orientation, and ongoing training of staff and faculty in the school.
  • Builds effective communication and collaboration strategies.
  • Promotes innovation in creation and delivery of programs, courses, concentrations, credentials, competencies, micro-credentials, and other alternative learning opportunities.
  • Creates special reports.
  • Maintains voting status on appropriate school and university curriculum committees.
  • Serves on the Academic Senior Leadership and the Provost's Council.
  • Conducts school of STEM meetings.
  • Manages the school budget.
  • Supports special university initiatives or programs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Doctoral degree in a STEM subject area. Preference to candidates with demonstrated experience in AI, Data Science/Analytics, and the Computer Sciences/Quantum Computing
  • Demonstrated experience with implementation of AI tools to support online instruction and student experience in the online classroom.
  • Extensive online education experience and experience with virtual and online labs.
  • Experience with accreditation and licensure of STEM programs and with leading online STEM programs.
  • Knowledge of the essential processes to assure quality of an online university and electronic classroom platforms, including laboratory learning experiences.
  • Detailed knowledge of curriculum development and improvement processes.
  • Knowledge of instructional design and learning theory principles in the online environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with effective student success approaches to increase retention, persistence, progression, and completion.
  • Ability to build relationships and partnerships in academia, business, industry, and government.
  • Ability to make ethical decisions and promote the highest standards of personal and professional integrity.
  • Strong ability to deal with ambiguity and to lead change management.
  • Proactive and creative problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to promote collegiality and manage conflict.
  • Ability to build strong teams and work effectively in cross-departmental committees.
  • Ability to meet critical and short notice delivery deadlines.
  • Strong oral, written, organizational. and presentation skills.
  • Experience with military and military affiliated student populations.
  • 5 years: Academic leadership experience as department chair, program director, or similar academic supervisory position at the university level.
  • 3 years: Experience with online education in higher education.
