The Fairfax County Health Department is a progressive public health leader serving 1.2 million residents and providing services that promote population health, protect public health and the environment, and ensure residents' equitable access to health services and information.

The Health Department seeks a Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) Program Assistant to support all aspects of the large Fairfax MRC volunteer program within the Division of Emergency Preparedness and Response. Under the general direction of the MRC Program Coordinator, the MRC Program Assistant provides critical support in the recruitment, onboarding, training, development, deployment, tracking and demobilization of Fairfax Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) volunteers. This includes assisting with volunteer-focused training and exercises, preparing required reports, assisting in emergency planning and response activities, providing routine support to MRC volunteers, and other related activities. Plays a key role in ensuring that the Fairfax MRC and its volunteers are prepared to respond to a wide variety of natural and man-made disasters and emergencies, including bioterrorism and natural disease outbreaks. This position functions in a back-up capacity to the MRC Coordinator, and evening/weekend work is frequently required.

NOTE: The salary for this position may not exceed the midpoint of $72,927.50.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for "Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to") Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in social or behavioral sciences, liberal arts, education or personnel administration; plus, one year of professional volunteer services coordination experience, including recruitment, selection, and/or placement of volunteers.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license.
  • CPR (Required within 60 days)
  • AED (Required within 60 days)
  • Certificates of Incident Command Systems training - NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800 within twelve (12) months from date of hire.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Volunteer coordination experience, including experience in all aspects of recruitment, enrollment, retention, and tracking of volunteers.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in administrative responsibilities including handling of confidential information, data entry, organizational skills, and attention to details.
  • Extensive experience in Microsoft Office applications, online databases and systems.
  • Practical experience developing and delivering training and other presentations to diverse audiences.
  • Experience in and understanding of emergency management and/or public health emergency preparedness and response, including the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command System (ICS).
  • Proven ability to multi-task and manage multiple priorities, time-sensitive projects and deliverables, and the ability to work in a dynamic, emergency preparedness and response-focused environments, including the necessity for after-hours and weekend work during incidents, trainings and exercises.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Job is generally sedentary in nature. However, job entails walking, standing, sitting, climbing stairs, reaching, bending, and using hands to grasp, handle, and feel. Must be able to lift from a ground position and carry up to 25 pounds. Visual acuity is required to read from paper and electronic devices. Must be able to operate computers and other keyboard-driven equipment and touchscreen electronics. Must be able to operate motor vehicles. Must be able to exchange accurate information orally and in writing. Generally, works in an office environment but is also required to perform job duties outside of a typical office setting (e.g. healthcare facilities, warehouses, shelters) including outdoor settings in all-weather conditions and nighttime hours. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a child protective services registry, and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
  • As an essential member of an emergency response organization, during an emergency activation, employee may be required to work irregular hours, work at a location other than the official duty station, and/or perform duties other than those specified in the employee's official position description.
