About the role:

The R&D Senior Engineer will support new product development of innovative, minimally invasive endoscopic medical devices by developing new technology, products, materials, processes, or equipment with minimal supervision. Independently, or as a member of a team, develops, directs, and executes plans for a major segment of complex projects from initial concept through design, analysis, and testing to establish technical specifications for designing or modifying products, processes, and materials.

This is an onsite position based in our Austin, Texas office located at 4221 Freidrich Ln, Austin, TX 78744.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Work as part of a cross-functional agile team (e.g. process development, quality, manufacturing, regulatory, clinical and marketing) for exploratory, technology development, and product development processes to ensure project success.
  • Coordinate with commercial team to compile user requirements from physicians and the medical community and translate these requirements into technical product requirements.
  • Consistently generate innovative and unique solutions to market needs, including development of prototypes for evaluation and refinement.
  • Design of components and complex mechanical assemblies, including detailed drawings, for products, tooling, and fixtures.
  • Develop, execute, and support design characterization activities, test method development, and verification and validation activities, including delivery of reports and similar documentation.
  • As required, assist and lead in R&D sustaining and manufacturing transfer activities.
  • Work with engineers, technicians, machinists, and designers to coordinate and complete assigned tasks and projects including creating working prototypes, specifications, documentation, and project timelines for new products or product revisions; take initiative to update leadership on work status or problems with recommendations for improvement or correction.
  • Work in compliance with quality systems, including design control and document control, in coordination with the Quality Assurance, Clinical and Risk Management functions.
  • Complete tasks in an efficient manner consistent with quality and corporate objectives; independently determine day-to-day tasks.
  • Coordinates, manages, and documents project goals and progress and recommends appropriate revisions.
  • May train and/or provide work direction to technicians and entry-level engineers.

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Physics, or related field.
  • 5+ years of relevant industry experience (medical device preferred).
  • Self-motivated with strong history of solving technical problems of varying complexity.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate with team members.
  • CAD modeling and Drafting experience.
  • Demonstrated technical writing skillset (e.g. protocols, reports, test methods, characterization plans)
  • Passion for learning about the relevant anatomy, understanding clinical use scenarios, and solving problems for end users.
  • Ability to travel intermittently to meet the needs of the business.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Strong design skills and mechanical engineering skillset.
  • Design Control experience, including verification and validation.
  • Knowledge of part manufacturing processes & tooling methodologies (e.g. quick prototyping, 3D printing, plastic injection molding, machining, extruding, laser cutting, and similar processes).
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks.
  • Knowledge of Quality systems and statistical process controls.
  • Knowledge of part manufacturing processes & tooling methodologies.
  • Knowledge of DFMA (design for manufacturing and assembly) principles.
